2nd International Congress

10th and 11th of June 2013
Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria

Connecting Senses

Machines, devices and plastic components of every type are receiving a second skin. Via sensors they are learning to interact with people and mediate between the world and us as intelligent assistants. This is creating a fundamental change in the quality of you perception, as we can thus amplify our senses by leaps and bounds to a pveviously unknown extent.

The omnipresence of computers, which has become a matter of course, in tandem with their networking, forms the infrastructure for this purpose. In the future, calculation capacity will no longer be the prime consideration, but rather the quality of physical interfaces. Smart Plastics combine the three key components comprised by electronics, plastics and design to create one of the most significant constitutive instruments for the coming decade.

For some time, we have been linked with another via the web and Smart Plastics mean that we will be increasingly involved with the things that surround us. Almost casually they will register our real activities and provide value added for us individually and collectively from the data generated.

Experience and interact with the environment. Anywhere and in real time. With the pushing back of the limits at the interfaces between humans and machines, our possibilities will multiply in an exponential manner.

Learn more about developments in the threshold area formed by plastics, electronics and design at the 2nd Smart Plastics Congress.

Linz/Austria “Plastics meet Electronics” has been the motto of the first international Smart Plastics Congress on 7th and 8th June 2011 at the Ars ElectronicaCenter in Linz/Austria. The Smart Plastics Initiative, which was founded at the beginning of this year and whose goal it is to make Upper Austria a one-stop shop for intelligent electronic plastic products invited with an interesting programme.

Dashboards without switches and buttons, flexible solar cells or medical diagnostics systems integrated in plastic products: Smart Plastics prepare the way to help these visions become reality. The combination of plastics technology, mechatronics and designnot only allows for new product ideas, but opens up enormous market potential at the same time. How to leverage this with the help of new technologies will be the topic of discussionsin the scope of the event.

The congress started in the evening of 7th June with a keynote by Prof. Niyazi SerdarSariciftci, the Head of the Institute for organic solar cells at the Johannes Kepler Universityof Linz. With a guided tour in the Ars Electroncia Center and a Congress Dinner finalized the first day.

50 companies from France, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Austria joined and enjoyed the programme and its wide range of topics around the motto of Plastics meet Electronics.

The second day did start with an an open innovation workshop within the main gallery of the Ars Electronica Museum. The unique atmosphere within the normally operating museum did result in a lot of new ideas and applications for the use of smart plastics in several fields of useage . The speakers included Mathew Gardiner (Orobotics AEC-Future Lab, Austria), Jaap Lombaers (Holst Centre, Netherlands), Thomas Müller (Chair of PlasticsTechnologies, University of Erlangen, Germany), Roland Streule (Sefar Holding, Switzerland), Dirk W. Pophusen (Bayer MaterialScience, Germany) and Dr. Markus Riester (maris TechCon, Austria).
.
Bundling expertise along the entire value-added chain
The important thing for the initiators and organisers has been the mutual exchange and the abilityto network with new contacts. Nowhere else in the world are the companies and theinfrastructure required for Smart Plastics represented in such large numbers and geographical proximity as in Upper Austria; and this is what prompted the founding of the Smart Plastics Initiative.

Companies and research institutes are now invited to join thenetwork.

“Our aim to promote cooperation between companies along the value-added chain in thisField has been successful”, emphasises Prof. Georg Steinbichler, Senior Vice President of Development Technologies with ENGEL AUSTRIA and Programme Chair of the event. “After all, the opportunities and challenges that this discipline presents require very different fields of expertise, which should preferably be accessible to partners via an efficient network.”

The network currently includes Hueck Folien, Schöfer, STIWA Automation, KEBA, Brands and Friends, ENGEL AUSTRIA, plastic electronic and formquadrat among the Plastics & Mechatronics Clusters as well as the Network Design&Media.

Dr Bergsmann, CEO of Hueck Folien and Speaker of the Initiative and Prof Steinbichler are glad that the experts from Europe did show solutions and new developments. They also look forward to welcome again to such an event as the feedback of the participants was very positive.
A great Thank You to the Experts with their interesting talks and to all who did join the congress.

Some impressions you may find with our photos from the congress.

Jeff Han’s intuitive “interface-free” computer displays — controlled by the touch of fingertips — will change forever the way you think about computers. At TED 2006, the audience whistled, clapped and gasped audibly as Han demoed (for the first time publicly) his prototype drafting table-cum-touch display, developed at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The demo included a virtual lightbox, where he moved photos by fingertip — as if they were paper on a desk — flicking them across the screen and zooming in and out by pinching two fingers together, as well as a Google Earth-like map that he tilted and flew over with simple moves.

When the demo hit the web, bloggers and YouTubers made him a bit of a megastar. (His video has been watched more than 600,000 times on YouTube alone; “Amazing,” “Incredible” and “Freaking awesome” are the typical responses there. Also: “When can I buy one?”) After this legendary demo, Han launched a startup called Perceptive Pixel — and when he came back to TED2007, he and his team brought an entire interactive wall, where TEDsters lined up to play virtual guitars. His talent and reputation earned him a place on Time Magazine’s 2008 list of the world’s 100 Most Influential People.

“Working all but alone from his hardware-strewn office, Jeff Han is about to change the face of computing. Not even the big boys are likely to catch him.”
